Canterbury - a knowable townWe chose Canterbury as an ideal location for a training centre of this kind. It is a beautiful town of human dimensions (population 40,000) with a rich history. Modern developments have been carefully integrated with the older parts of the city. It offers fine cultural, social and sporting opportunities for our participants. In the words of one of our participants, a CFO from Germany: “It is an interesting, historic city which you can get to know quickly, perfect for your training centre - and you can't get lost!” It is surrounded by beautiful countryside and is close to the attractive coastline, with the charming oyster town of Whitstable, with its thriving artist community, working harbour and seafood restaurants, only 10 kms away. View some photographs of Canterbury and the surrounding area. HistoryCanterbury's history, dominated by the magnificent gothic Cathedral, is recounted in the city's many museums and visitor attractions. It has three World Heritage Sites (The Cathedral, St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church) and a wealth of old buildings and narrow streets. An introduction to Canterbury (guided tour in summer, presentation in winter) is included in our Social Programme every two weeks. CultureCanterbury has two theatres, two cinemas, numerous pubs with live music and an annual Arts Festival which attracts leading performers from all over the world. Literary connections range from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales to the great 19C novelist Charles Dickens. Its Art College (now The University College for the Creative Arts) has always been associated with innovations in the arts, including the 60's music movement known as The Canterbury Scene. SocialCanterbury is a commercial, educational and legal centre for the region, with a diverse social mix. It is home to two universities as well as the creative arts college. Increasingly, young professional people are buying into the city housing developments, often fashioned from buildings previously of commercial or industrial use. It is surrounded by unspoilt villages where many professional families choose to make their homes. Canterbury has a wide variety of restaurants with an international emphasis: Italian, French, Spanish, North African, Belgian, Thai, Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese, Mexican. Most of Canterbury's many pubs offer food, and this is where you are most likely to find 'English' food. We use a variety of local restaurants for lunches accompanied by trainers - see lunches. SportThere are 15 golf courses within 30 minutes' drive of Canterbury! We have good contacts with several of the local golf clubs and can make arrangements for CLT participants to play, if time allows (we can also arrange tailor made English and Golf combination programmes). There are fitness centres and tennis facilities in the city and Canterbury is home to the Kent County Cricket Club and a very successful hockey club. ConnectionsCanterbury has good road and rail connections to the rest of Britain (London 100 minutes by train) as well as continental Europe. It is 30 minutes from the Eurostar service at Ashford International station, the port of Dover and the Channel Tunnel car terminal at Folkestone. For all points of arrival and departure, including all the London Airports, the CLT guaranteed transfer service can be arranged if requested. Useful links
